Quality Accessible Training from Wayahead
Wayahead Training was formed in the belief that the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award should be accessible to as many individuals as possible. This includes those who wish to participate in a bronze, silver or gold programme, teachers and other adults who want to set up or support a DofE group or become volunteer assessors and supervisors.
Founder and director Matt Hutson has been involved with the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award for over 25 years, as a participant and then as an assessor, supervisor and DofE Manager. He has set up several DofE centres, managed an Expedition Network and delivered many of the DofE’s training programmes across Central England and beyond.
As an International Mountain Leader, Matt has planned and led numerous expeditions across 5 continents, and is a recognised Technical Advisor for most forms of DofE Expeditions. In addition Matt is a course director for Mountain Training and the Royal Lifesaving Society and will deliver or oversee many of our training programmes.
As Wayahead Training has grown, so has the core team. Rob Boyllin joins us as Operations Manager, bringing with him an enormous range of experience of outdoor education, from Birmingham City Council and his time with the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Central England Regional Office. A qualified mountaineer, mountain bike instructor and canoe coach, Rob is our AAP manager and will oversee the delivery of our DofE programmes and develop some of our coaching courses.
Barry Woods is our Stores Manager, responsible for all of our equipment, from tents to defibrillators, boats to bikes, Barry will bring all of his practical skills and experience from his time in the Royal Airforce, into keeping our equipment safe and in excellent condition. As a qualified mountain leader you will also see him working with many of our DofE groups.
Emily Hutson joins us as our Education Manager. A qualified geography teacher, Forest School leader, and Summer Mountain Leader, she brings a wealth of practical experience to our training, especially our environmental programmes, and ensures that what we offer provides real quality learning outside of the classroom.
Supporting the core team are our freelance staff, numbering twenty five in total, these staff work on many of our DofE programmes , development programmes and skills development courses. All are well qualified in their disciplines, and personally known to the core team.
You can be confident that any programme undertaken with Wayahead Training will be student focussed, safety conscious and professionally delivered.
